Our wild journey

Rene and Andrea

Trip Start: Jun 01 2008 -

We are a German-Czech couple who travel in their 1992 Nissan Patrol "The Bumblebee" from Tunisia to South Africa via the Eastern Route.

Long, very long is the way, but it is OUR WAY, OUR DREAM. Some people may dream of their career, a big house, big cars, holiday on the beach and many more, though often, they just stay dreams. We want to fulfill our dream, we want to smell the smell of Africa, feel its magic, see its wonderful nature, experience all the sunrises and sunsets we can get and listen to the sound of the animals. On the other side, of course, we want to experience the culture and traditions of many tribes. In short words, we want everything that this continent can offer.

The idea to go to Africa has been “brooding” in Andrea for a long time, but she first flew to New Zealand, where she worked and traveled. But this land “down under” isn’t quite as exotic and different as Africa is and the (really big) unknown was calling! Not the exact “whens” and “hows”, but something like the beat of the drums calling! :o) So first we tried to find some volunteer work in a National Park, but found that the prices were soaringly high, we just wondered how much really comes through to the actual Park! So we swapped this idea for buying a car in South Africa and drive to Kenya…that was when we heard about overlanding, driving all the way from Europe to South Africa – a fascinating idea! After quite a lot of research that’s what we found: we plan to cross this black continent from the northernmost point in Tunisia, called “Ras Ben Sakka”, then proceed to Libya, visit Egypt before crossing the Sudan, entering Ethiopia and then travel southwards through Tanzania, Botswana towards the southernmost point in South Africa, which is not the “Cape of Good Hope” as many think, but as you can see on the map it’s “Cape Agulhas”.
