Riding out the Recession

Sean Maher

Trip Start: Nov 01 2009 - Trip End: Dec 15 2009

Recent graduate Sean Maher on his plans to Ride out the Recession from Cornwall in the UK to Cape Town, South Africa.

I’ve learnt from university that people will go a long way to make their CV stand out. I think I might be going further though: about 12,000 miles.

I graduated in June this year and like many of my friends and contemporaries have struggled to find work. It’s not just me though. Research by the National Union of Students in April this year found that 80 % of undergraduates were either concerned of very concerned by their employment prospects and record numbers of graduates are out of work.

I didn’t want to sit around and mope in the UK so instead I decided to do something wildly different: cycle through Africa. I aim to raise a minimum of £10,000 pounds for charity during the lifespan of the trip which should be about 6 months at 50 miles a day.
